A place where simple choices contribute to the wellbeing of people and planet
Kinfolk is Melbourne’s latest and most exciting social enterprise project. Kinfolk operates as a premium café, serving quality espresso and fresh, healthy produce, all the while redirecting its profits to various worthwhile international and local development projects! Kinfolk is located at the prime location of 675 Bourke St, Melbourne CBD.
As to further sustain and increase the scope of YGAP’s development work, particularly concerning 2010 project partners (ranging from education, health and advocacy-oriented projects in Ghana, Rwanda and Bangladesh of note) it has been recognised that a consistent source of revenue, separate to corporate and private donations, need be established. Henceforth, the Kinfolk model was born; designed to run as a profitable business, yet one that utilises its gains constructively as a vehicle to promote positive change, both local and global.
Kinfolk’s mission is to be an avenue for city-goers to seamlessly integrate ethical consumption into their daily purchasing, as they are given the opportunity to decide where their monies will be directed and furthermore, presented with a selection of high-quality products that maintain a responsible relationship to the supply chain. We have created a café environment where consumption is intrinsically linked to contribution & giving, not just receiving.
Kinfolk is also a space for celebration of the volunteer and a unique mechanism that links all walks of life together, united under the banner of ‘giving-back’ and innovation in ethical practice. Kinfolk provides opportunities for café patrons to connect with the people, the stories and the projects that they are supporting. Furthermore, Kinfolk offers an inviting, creative and sustainable environment that promotes cultural community interaction and dialogue about matters of social purpose.
Significant achievements to date include a year’s supply of coffee and unwavering support from the reputable coffee manufacturer Di Bella and philanthropic foundation, The Donkey Wheel. Of further priceless importance is the voluntary technical expertise of certified trades-people, architects, interior designers, accountants, sustainability strategists and hospitality professionals, who constitute the Advisory Board and hands-on General Committee.
As YGAP continues to grow it is envisaged that Kinfolk will undoubtedly act as a platform for volunteer training, skill development, skill use, innovation and creativity. YGAP anticipates Kinfolk to be an outstanding source of inspiration for those in the development sector, whilst exemplifying corporate social responsibility and ethical consumerism.
