The Issue: Child Slavery
In Ghana, children as young as four years old from vulnerable communities are sold into slavery to work in the fishing industry of the Volta Region. At a very young age, the children are made to work up to 14 hours a day. They often experience adverse physical and psychological abuse, and are unable to access school and medical services.
Our Response: LifeLink
YGAP launched LifeLink in December 2009: a fundraising program that raises local Australian donations through corporate sponsorship and various other initiatives, including a 5 dollar a week donations program. Our combined goal is to work together to empower the region’s vulnerable families in order to reduce the risk of their children being sold into the fishing industry.
Funding is used to assist our in‐country project partner, City of Refuge Ministries (CORM), a grassroots organisation working in Ghana’s Lake Volta region. CORM’s goal is to prevent the trafficking and exploitation of children in the fishing industry. Their approach is multi-faceted, providing the best possible response to this complex issue.
Progress So Far:
- $100,000: constructed 7 classrooms to educate 120 students
- $8,000: donations from YGAP’s Kinfolk Cafe
- $35,000: Ride West Africa initiative donation to LifeLink
Looking Forward…
- YGAP will send 10 volunteers to Ghana in November / December 2012
- YGAP is raising funds to construct 2 more classrooms
- YGAP will develop a water purification business to provide employment for single mothers
